Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an enclosure, identified only as a cropmark. The cropmark shows a broad, near circular, ditch with a narrow ditch concentrically within, revealed by aerial photography in 1975. Six pits forming a regular hexagon some 6.0m in diameter, is 40m to the east. Also ten post-pits form a circle some 10m in diameter, about 85m to the west. These features may possibly be 'ritual structures' of henge type.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual activity. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
