The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period, which stands in the churchyard, on the south side of the church. The monument is c3.5m in total height standing on a set of five steps which are 4m square at the base and 1.4m high. Above the steps is a large cross base measuring, 0.6m high and 0.8m in width and depth with large chamfered stops in the corners. The cross shaft is 0.2m square with chamfered corners and made of two pieces standing in a socket in the middle of the base. The lower section is 0.8m high and starts to taper slightly at the top. The upper section is 0.7m high, and is tapering with a simple cross on top. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
