Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. This site consists of a series of enclosures with associated huts. The huts sometimes occur amongst a mass of stone rubble. Other features on the site are: a pile of stones at K; a rectangular setting of stones 3.5m x 1.5m at L; the foundations of a small building 2.4 m square at M; the remains of two rectangular buildings at N; and a large, multi-cellular sheepfold at P. A pair of later tracks cross the site to the S of the sheepfold, and another track runs from W to E just N of the sheepfold. A series of small hollows to the N and similar to the E of the sheepfold may denote quarrying. The site is in good condition and shows a series of land use changes from the prehistoric period to the 19th C. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
