Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a small stone-built settlement with associated field boundaries and cultivation terraces. The settlement is roughly defined by a stone bank; within which four circular huts are grouped around a central courtyard, three joined together, the fourth isolated. The two huts at the W seem to be built against the wall of the enclosure. Excavation in 1921-2 demonstrated later prehistoric occupation. To the S are 3 terraces apparently associated with the settlement, they run in a NE - SW direction, occupying most of the field in which the settlement is situated. The archaeological value of these well-preserved terraces lies in their potential relationship with the settlement, which could be tested by excavation; such a testable relationship is rare. To the N are extensive boundaries associated with the settlement and traces of an early trackway leading to the settlement. The remains are well-preserved and stone-walled field plots and lynchets can be identified. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
