The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument consists of a small group of low mounds, the remains of Roman kilns for the production of brick/tile or pottery, lying E of the Roman road at Pen y Stryd, and S of a small stream. Mound 1 at SH72693190. An oval mound measuring 11m WNW-ESE and 8m NNE-SSW. It is open on the N side, which faces the stream, and is typical of a prehistoric burnt mound, although in this case the hollow centre is probably due to excavations mentioned by Pennant in 1781. The stream is presently some 2m below the mound. Mound 2 at SH72753192. Situated 70m WNW of Mound 1 and 27m SE of the stream. An irregular mound 8m in diameter, with a path skirting round the W side. There is a dip in the centre which probably marks an early excavation. Fifteen metres S of Mound 1, at SH72693189, is a third feature. It is a low oval mound 8m x 4m. Some burnt stone is visible on the surface. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Roman brick/tile or pottery production techniques. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
