Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The site occupies a low oval hill which is the highest point locally and offers good views. The N end of the hill is rocky, rounded and higher; to the S it tails off in a flattish ridge. Here there is a field system consisting of walls and clearance cairns (some of which seem to be fairly recent or recently added to), with some rather indistinct features which may be long huts.
The hillfort crowns the higher N part of the hill, but seems to have been largely cleared - the wall is very degraded, consisting of a line of stones at the break of slope and a scatter down the sides of the hill.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement and defence. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
