Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The present remains are situated on the eastern side of a polygonal, almost circular, churchyard, and represent the remains of a church; a 15th century chancel and a north chapel added in 1638. The nave and a south chapel have not survived. The principal architectural details remaining are the re-set 15th century doorway in the west wall of the chancel, and the late 16th century window in the east wall of the chancel. The north chapel contains two three-light windows. A cross-incised gravestone of 7th - 11th century date lies on the floor of the chancel.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval ecclesiastical buildings. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
