Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of an upright slab, c.1.35m by 0.65m and 0.15m thick, embedded in cement against the outer face of the East wall of the church. The stone is rough hewn and pecked on the surface in a cross with slight serifs at the ends of the arms and a deep hole in each angle between the arms. The cross is of the same type as that at Clynogfawr which is connected with St Bernard (c.630) but the holes indicate a more advanced type. It can be dated to the 8th or 9th century. It was found in 1847 covering a grave. [Nash Williams 131, Edwards CD1]
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.
