The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of a decorated stone, probably dating to the later 9th or early 10th century. The stone measures c.0.92m by 0.3m by 0.12m. It was lying loose in the cemetery SE of the church but has now been moved into the church, where it lies loose in the vestry. Two faces are dressed flat, the edges left untrimmed. On one of the flat faces is a panel of well-designed interlace formed by cutting away the background. On the other is a panel of diagonal key pattern. The lower part of the stone was left plain for setting in the ground; there is no trace of mortice on the top. [Nash Williams 129; Edwards CD30] The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A decorated stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
