The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises the remains of an inscribed stone 2.0 m high by 0.9 m wide by 0.8 m. It stands in a field beside the road next to a small quarry. The top of the stone and upper S side have been broken off. On the N side is a Latin inscription in two lines reading vertically downwards - 'CVNOGVS-/HIC IACET' ('the Stone of Cunogus(s)us/He lies here'). The lettering is faint but still legible. The inscription has been dated to the late fifth or sixth century. The personal name recorded may be Irish in origin, and may survive in the name of the nearby settlement of Pencarnisiog. This inscribed stone may be one of the few remaining in situ, although situated as it is between the road and the quarry, much potential archaeological evidence may have been lost. A possible cup mark on the E side of the stone may indicate a prehistoric use originally. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity and our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
