Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. An extensive prehistoric settlement site on a SE-facing slope below a rocky outcrop, comprising a field system with several clear enclosures and about six hut circles, plus clearance cairns etc. The huts are mostly not very well preserved but the field walls by contrast are better preserved than usual. The site is divided by the road and in general the features in the main part of the site above the road are clearer and easier to see, though partly overlain with modern features (sheepfolds etc.) The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
