Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a house dating to the post- medieval period. The core of the house is probably 16th or 17th century with later phases dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. It is built around a north to south range c. 22.5m long, in rubble stone, roughly coursed in a mortar of various mixes of clay with lime, chippings or coal-dust. The range is divided into two rooms by a corridor, the earliest phase of the house is immediately north of this and incorporates the chimney-breast at the rear of the building that formerly supported a substantial, round chimney.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of settlement and domestic activity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. A house may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
