Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises a complex of earthworks comprising low mounds divided by shallow ditches enclosed within low clay banks. The site had been identified as the site of a possible medieval manor house, supported by the presence of ridge and furrow cultivation in surrounding fields. In 1985 excavation undertaken advance of road construction across the north part of the original extent of the site suggested the site is more likely to represent a post medieval garden. The earliest finds dated from the late 17th century and the excavated area was interpreted as having a 17th / 18th century date though the possibility of earlier settlement has not been discounted.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the use of gardens. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
