The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of a stone with a cross carved into the surface, probably dating to the medieval period. This is a waterworn boulder, 0.86m high, 0.4m wide and 1.2m thick, roughly rectangular in shape with a rounded top and flat but sloping back. On one face is incised a double outlined Latin cross, the upper part of which is surrounded by a double ring. The four arms of the cross protrude beyond the wheel head. The other face is not decorated. The cross was found in the ground during work on a wall adjacent to a derelict building and is now fixed, by its base only, into the wall which protects it from weathering. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A cross marked stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
