Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period, which stands in the churchyard, on the south side of the church. The cross has been carved from a single piece of stone and stands c2m in height tapering slightly in section from the bottom where it has dimensions of 0.2m wide and 0.15m depth and sits on a square base of the same stone which is 0.1m high and 0.7m in width and breadth. The cross is roughly carved and unadorned; its arms measure c0.5m across.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. It is an unusual example of its class, its crude design and simplicity making it impossible to date with any certainty. Located in a likely pre-Norman circular churchyard it retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
