Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument. The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead. It comprises a rectangular moated site, c 23m square within a moat c 8m wide and counterscarp bank c 2m wide. The site is in excellent condition; the moat platform is fairly level with no signs of disturbance, while the moat is waterlogged in places and therefore has good potential for organic remains. There is no clear entrance. A circular feature in the south-west corner may be an earlier pond or quarry. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
