Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead. It consists of a square platform with a 1m high bank running along the S side. On the W, N and E sides there is a flat bottomed ditch up to 4m wide and 2m deep. On the S side the edge of the platform drops steeply to a modern road. The moated site may be the predecessor of Penbidwal House, built between 1550 and 1610, which is located to the NE. The 13th century memorial accounts refer to the “Reeve of Penbidwal” and it seems to have formed a demesne Lordship within the Lordship of Abergavenny.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
