Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. A massive cairn on top of Mynydd Carnguwch. It is at least 30 m in diameter and 6 m high. A huge pile of stone, built around a natural outcrop of rock. Half way up the cairn is a revetment wall, exposed to a height of 1.5 m. The top of the cairn has been disturbed: the centre has been hollowed out, and other hollows have been dug into the E side. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric funerary and ritual activities. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
