Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument consists of a stone with a cross carved into the surface, probably dating to the 8th or 9th century. The stone is now in use as a lintel over the door of a stable and has been cut down to fit, so that part of the cross is missing. The stone may also have been split in half, the other half being the companion lintel in the other half of the building.
The cross was removed in the 19th century from a slight mound in a field known as Cae Pen-y-Maen on the boundary between the parishes of Nefyn and Pistyll, human bones having previously been ploughed up in the same field, so that the stone presumably came from an early Christian cemetery or chapel site.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity and retains significant archaeological potential. A cross marked stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
