Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved and typical example of a platform house with adjoining enclosure and paddock. The house and enclosure occupy a level terrace on a NW-facing slope. The house is orientated roughly E-W (at right-angles to the slope) and is 3.5m wide and 8m long internally. The walls are grass-covered stone 1m wide and 0.2m high. At the W end the platform is raised by 0.6m and the supporting wall is 1.5m wide. There may have been entrances in both the N and S sides, towards the W end. The house sits within an enclosure marked by a line of boulders to the N and a low stone bank to the S. The adjacent enclosure to the W (paddock) sits on the crest of a high natural terrace and is marked by a wall of large boulders 0.6m high on the S side, and a low grass-covered stone bank on the N side. Traces of ridge and furrow cultivation running E-W are visible in the field to the S (and possibly to the N too). The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
