Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a stone circle, probably dating to the Bronze Age. It is sited on gently-sloping, W-facing, enclosed upland pasture. The whole circumference of a low bank survives to a height of 30 to 40 cm high, but is best preserved on the N and NE. It encloses an oval or egg-shaped area measuring about 20m NW-SE by 15m NE-SW. The bank may be made up of small stones, but is now turfed over.
About 9 stones were recognised set into the bank at the time the site was designated a scheduled ancient monument in 1990. Most of them were small and projected only 10 to 20cm above the surface, but two larger stones (30 to 40cm high) are still standing, although they lean markedly to the SW.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual and funerary practises. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The monument also has group value with other prehistoric remains in the area.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
