Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument consists of a medieval or post-medieval holy well called Ffynnon Gwenfaen, it is on the cliff between the boundary wall of the farm and the sea. It has a paved forecourt with stone slab seats across the corners, reached by three narrow steps down, and the well is a rectangular tank opposite the steps. There is a second tank outside the wall across the back of the well, with steps down to it either side, and the water then flows away as a small stream. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of water management systems. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
