Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a two stones with a cross carved into their surface, probably dating to the medieval period which are gravestones built into the outer face of the of the churchyard wall. They face the road on the west side c14m south of the entrance gate. They are separated by a distance of 1.5m. The first of these stones is 1.06m.in height and has a width of 0.5m; the upper part is incised with a cross within a circle which is 0.28m in diameter. The second stone is 1.17m.in height and has a width of 0.5m; the upper part is also incised a cross within a circle which is 0.3m in diameter.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity. A cross marked stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
