Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The site consists of the foundations of a small church surrounded by a nearly square churchyard, probably dating to the medieval period. The walls of the church remain to a height of 0.5 - 1 m, and the building measures 3.9 m by 5.1 m internally. A cross wall divides the building at the E end. The churchyard is about 26 m square, and the interior stands some 1.0 m above the surrounding field.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval ecclesiastical organisation and practises and forms an important element within the wider medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits, which may be expected to contain information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
