Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead. It comprises a rectangular moated site, c. 40 x 45 M. internally (surviving dimensions); the east side has been destroyed by farm buildings and the interior is used for horticulture. On the 3 remaining sides the moat is well defined and water-filled. Traditionally there was a building on the platform until the 19th C., though no traces survive now. The entrance probably lies in the S.E. corner.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
