The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a group of five barrows situated along a ridge at Bier Hier and which date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The westernmost barrow measures 20m in diameter and is 0.3m high, the western barrow measures 30m in diameter and is c 1m high, the central barrow measures 30m in diameter and is 1.4m high, the eastern barrow measures 30m in diameter and is c 0.4m high whilst the the easternmost barrow is 30m in diameter and c 1.0m high. Apart from the westernmost the other barrows were investigated between 1851 and 1856 when variously human remains, pottery and flints were recovered. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The barrows importance is further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
