Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains a burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is situated on enclosed land at just under 120m above OD. The cairn is large and stands upon a platform made up of stones. The platform, now covered in grass, is oval and measures about 30.5m long from north to south by 27.4m wide and 0.3 to 0.6m high. It has been robbed, especially on the eastern side where the removal of stone has revealed that the cairn has an outer envelope of large rounded boulders and an inner core of generally smaller stones including many fragments of pink sandstone.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. Cairns may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
