Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a cemetery, the findspot of an early medieval inscribed stone, the Brohomagli Stone (see DE096), now at Voelas Hall. In about 1820, when the Holyhead road was being built, a cemetery of about 40 long cist graves was discovered at Dol Tre Beddau ('place of the graves'). They lay east-west and a sixth-century memorial stone (the Brohomagli Stone) had been re-used as the cover of one cist, inscribed face downwards. Following the discovery, the area of the cemetery was left as a strip of wooded land alongside the road.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of early medieval burial practices, very few other Latin memorial stones have archaeological contexts. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
