Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
A coverstone from one of approximately 40 graves found during the construction of the Holyhead road in 1820. Inscribed in Latin BROHOMAGLI IATTI HIC IACIT ET VXOR EIVUS CAVNE, "(the stone) of Brohomaglus Iattus. he lies here, and his wife Caune". The details suggest the possible association of the stone with a 5th-6th century early Christian cemetery (see also DE239).
The Brohomagli stone is displayed on the west facing wall of an open fronted veranda overlooking the front gardens of Voelas Hall. The stone measures 1.57m in length, 0.53m across, and 0.1m in thickness. The inscription is quite well defined, the stone is grey in colour, though the outer surface bearing the inscription is of a more reddish tone. The surface has at some earlier time sustained damage at the north end of the stone, and partly below the inscription. A slate tablet mounted in the wall below is incised with the following inscription: 'The Brochmael Stone found in 1821 about 300 yards east of the bridge at Hendre Isaf during the construction of the Holyhead road by Telford.'
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of early medieval inscription and burial. It retains significant archaeological potential.
