Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of three lengths of a dyke or boundary monument, measuring approximately 80 metres, 180 metres and 100 metres in length. Formerly identified as Offa's Dyke, this stretch forms part of what is now referred to as the Whitford Dyke. Dykes are a defensive boundary or earthwork, dating to the later prehistoric/medieval period. Excavation shows that this stretch consisted of a bank flanked by ditches on either side.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of early medieval defensive organisation and settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A linear earthwork may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
