Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an exceptionally well preserved slate quarry incline, connected to the Talyllyn Railway, linking the terraces and workshops of Bryneglwys Quarry. The incline formation is revetted in stone and retains the double line of rails for much of its length and a set of points at the top where the incline joins the level track. The drumhouse is offset above the track on a large outcrop. It is slate built with a timber and slated roof. The cast iron and timber drum is intact, with a length of haulage cable and connecting rods to a brake lever at the incline top.
The monument is of national importance as a well preserved area within a slate quarry, which contains important evidence of slate quarrying, preparation, transport and infrastructure. Inclines may be part of a larger cluster of industrial monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
