Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a water power system, which formed part of the Deeside Slateworks. The remains include an office building, a smithy, a large water wheel pit adjacent to the footings of the main works building of which little survives save seven huge buttresses against the bank, on which wooden tramrails from the tram line still survive. The tram road embankment running down to the winding engine still survives, as does the winding house of slate, albeit in bad condition. An incline (cut by a track) leads down towards the station at Glandyfyrdwy.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of water management systems. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
