Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises an impressive standing stone, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). It is a large block of stone, standing 1.3m in height and measuring 1m in thickness from NE to SW and 0.7m in width. A quartz strip runs upwards through the centre of the stone and is particularly visible on the SE face. The standing stone is situated to the N of a boggy pond. At least two further large long slabs of stone are lying in the field bank immediately to the S of the standing stone - it is very likely that these originally stood upright and were associated.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The monument retains significant archaeological potential with a strong probability of associated archaeological features and deposits and forms an important element in the wider prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. Its probable association with a round barrow (RD009), situated to the SE, and with two further standing stones, both situated to the S (RD231 and RD232), further enhances its importance.
The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 22m in diameter, reflecting the possibility that the monument was originally more complex.
