The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument, also known as Rhos Maen Hir, comprises a standing stone, probably dating from the Bronze Age period (2300 - 800 BC). It is located on the top of a local ridge and overlooks the upper reaches of the Afon Wenallt to the E. The standing stone is earthfast and measures 2m in height, 0.6m in width and 0.6m in depth. Formerly, the standing stone was used as a gatepost in a hedgebank between two fields. The standing stone is now free standing, as the hedgebank has been removed in order to merge the two fields into one. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The feature is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of intact ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed with adjacent monuments to the N and W. The scheduled area has been revised in order to correspond more closely with the archaeological remains on the ground. The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape and measures 10m in diameter.
