Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period. The 1m tall pillar-stone measures 0.3m square at its base and was placed in its present position by a local builder who found it in part of a chimney that he was demolishing. Each of its four faces and top have been incised with a cross, the cross to the south face is wheel headed.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described.
