Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a stone with a cross carved into the surface, probably dating to the 7th-9th century AD which has been set into the floor of the church against the south wall adjacent to the altar. The stone is 1.7m in length and 0.4m wide and has been inscribed with a large deeply incised linear cross with 5 rings and dot devices symmetrically disposed in the centre and at arm ends with 4 crosslets in each interspace.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of early medieval Christianity. A cross marked stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
