Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The site consists of a substantial, flat-topped oval mound measuring 55m by 48m, oriented NW-SE, which lies amongst river marshes. It is up to 2.5m in height and approximately 60m in diameter. A chapel may formerly have stood upon the mound and there may have been a ditch around its base. It may date to the early medieval period, or have a prehistoric origin. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of ritual and burial practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
