Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument consists of 2 standing stones, probably dating to the Bronze Age, one much larger than the other. The larger stone is 1.4m long, but leans at an angle of 60° to the ground so that its tip is only 1.1m above ground. It is rectangular in section, 0.5m wide on the E face and 0.6m wide on the N face. The stone is a close-grained mid-grey sandstone largely concealed by lichens.
The smaller stone lies about 2m to the SE and is embedded in the ground. The visible portion is a triangle facing SE, the apex of which stands 0.5m above ground.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric funerary and ritual practises. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
