Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
Three quarry scoops of Neolithic date, associated with stone axe production. Each is approx. 5 m in diameter, terraced into the hill slope with a pronounced bank on the W side and slighter on E. Now in heather moorland with shale exposed in places. It is one of very few surviving sites in Britain with evidence of stone axe production, and is linked with the Neolithic axe trade.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Neolithic stone axe production and trade. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
