Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a group of cairns which forms part of the larger group all along the track at Bwlch-y-Ddeufaen. Barclodiad-y-Gawres is the most noticeable of the cairns, having survived as a largish heap of stones, and this is presumably why it is sufficiently well known to have a name. The rest are larger or smaller earthfast spreads of stone. One of this group may in fact be the remains of a building.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric funerary and ritual practice . The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
