Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of Denbigh town, dating to the Medieval period.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Roman/medieval urban organisation and of the growth of towns. The monument forms an important element within the wider Roman/medieval context and the structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. The scheduled area is bounded to the north by the highway abutting Gwalia Villas and Bronygaer; to the east by the boundary wall of Plas Castell; to the south-east by Denbigh Town Walls; to the south-west by the east wall of Denbigh Castle and the curtilage of Bowling Green House; to the west by that portion of the scheduled area of Denbigh Town Walls covering the Exchequer Tower.
