Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of two enclosed hut circles, which probably date from the first millennium BC. The enclosure itself is sub-rectangular measuring c 60m by 45m set on a north facing slope. It is surrounded by a shallow ditch, 4-6m wide, with a low external bank which forms the base of the modern hedges on two sides, and a more prominent internal bank on the southern and parts of the eastern and western sides. There is an entrance by an earthen causeway in the eastern side. About one third of the interior has been excavated revealing two circular house platforms and the posts of the gateway.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement practices. It is an important relic of the prehistoric landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of environmental and structural evidence, including preserved internal and external floor levels.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
