Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of three prehistoric cairns and a standing stone, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC). The monuments were scheduled in 1961, but the area covered by the original scheduling did not relate accurately to the remains on the ground. The scheduled area has been revised in order to rectify the original designation. Cairn 'A' is circular in shape on plan, measuring c. 20m in diameter. It has a rounded profile, c. 1.3m in height. Cairn 'B' is circular in shape on plan, measuring c. 25m in diameter. It consists of two concentric banks, measuring c. 1.5m in width and 0.3m in height, spaced c. 1.5m apart. Cairn 'C' is circular in shape on plan, measuring c. 22m in diameter. It has a low profile, c. 0.3m in height. Standing Stone 'D' is recumbent and measures 1.8m long, 1.3m wide and 0.3m thick.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are important relics of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by their collective group value.
The area scheduled comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. Area 'A' is centred on Item 'A' (NGR SN 41123 35923). It is circular except where it meets the boundary hedge on the E and S sides and measures 35m in diameter. Area 'B' is centred on Item 'B' (NGR SN 41040 35995). It is circular and measures 40m in diameter. Area 'C' is centred on Item 'C' (NGR SN 40946 36072). It is circular and measures 35m in diameter. Area 'D' is centred on Item 'D' (NGR SN 40995 36064). It is circular and measures 15m in diameter.
