The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork/stone-built enclosure. The date or precise nature of the enclosure is unknown, but it is likely to be later prehistoric. Longstone Camp is located on a south-facing slope and is a sub-circular or oval banked and ditched enclosure measuring c.60m northwest to south by 48m. The earthworks are best preserved on the north side where the bank stands 0.5m to 0.7m internally and up to 2m externally. It is 7m wide. The ditch on this side is 4m wide. On the south side the defences survive only up to only 0.10m high. The entrance is on the south southwest and opens into the west end of an annexe traceable as a slight sub-rectangular earthwork measuring c. 50m by 25m. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
