Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a large earthen round barrow, a burial monument probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is located in the NE corner of an enclosed field of pasture at the top of a gentle S facing slope. The barrow is oval in shape on plan and measures c. 48m N-S by 38m E-W. The monument would originally have been circular in shape on plan; the oval shape is a result of previous episodes of ploughing. It has a tall rounded profile and measures a maximum of 1.7m in height. A support pole for electricity supply cables is located on the summit of the barrow.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 60m in diameter.
