Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a a particulary well preserved isolated hut circle that probably dates to the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). The hut circle has an internal diameter of about 5m and retains features such as the inner and outer facing wall and possibly also an orthostatic door jamb. Its isolated position contrasts with the enclosed hut circles in the vicinity.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric domestic construction practices. The monument retains significant archaeological potential and there is a strong probability that structural evidence has survived, together with internal and external floor surfaces. Its association with the enclosed hut circles in the vicinity gives group value but also considerable research potential as a complimentary and broadly contemporary settlement type.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
