Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a road, dating to the Roman period (1st to 5th century AD) and measures 330m in length, crossing the boggy floodplain of the Afon Gronw. The road shows as a prominent agger 10m wide and up to 1m high running across permanent pasture fields before, towards its eastern end it underlies a hedgerow. Excavation of the adjacent stretch has shown that the road construction survives almost intact built on the corduroy timber base with side ditches.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Roman military organisation/medieval transport systems. The monument forms an important element within the wider context of the Roman occupation/medieval settlement of Wales and the structure may contain well preserved archaeological evidence concerning chronology, layout and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
