Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument consists of a prehistoric settlement site, probably dating to the Iron Age and Romano-British period (c.800BC - AD400). It lies on a slightly elevated limestone plateau beside an old lane running from Llanbedrgoch to Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf, about 0.6 km SW of the modern settlement of Benllech. A massive enclosure bank survives around part of the settlement and within this are at least two orthostatic hut circles, one of which is exceptionally large, measuring 10m in internal diameter and is particularly well preserved. There may also be a rectangular hut in the SW corner.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric/Romano-British settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
