The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument, also known as Castell Carreg-Wen, comprises the remains of an earthwork defended enclosure, which probably dates to the Iron Age period (c. 800 BC - AD 74, the Roman conquest of Wales). It is located on a local summit of a SW-facing spur and overlooks Nant Cwmnewydion to the S. There are precipitous slopes on all but the NE side. The enclosure is oval in shape and measures 83m NE-SW by a maximum of 62m transversely. A well-preserved bank constructed across the promontory neck defended the approach from the NE with natural scarps on the other three sides. The bank measures 20m in length, 5m in width and up to 1m in height. The entrance is E-facing. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is an irregular sub-circular shape on plan and measures c. 50m in diameter.
