Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument, also known as Garrig Hir (the tall stone), comprises the remains of an earthfast prehistoric standing stone, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is located on a W-facing slope in a small enclosed field to the W of Pant y Garrig Hir farmhouse. The standing stone is diamond-shaped in cross-section and rises to a sharp point. It is aligned E-W and leans heavily to the SW. It measures 2.1m in recumbent length and 1.5m in height. The base measures c. 1m in width (E-W) and 0.45m in depth (N-S). A packing stone is visible on the E side of the stone.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact ritual deposits, together with structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed by the association of the standing stone with other standing stones to the E and W.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. The scheduled area is circular in shape and measures 6m in diameter.
